HAIRSPRAY – ARE YOU USING IT CORRECTLY?

Chances are you've used hairspray at some point but the question is, are you using it correctly? Here's some handy tips;

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPRAY FOR YOUR STYLE: There are several types of hairsprays on the market and sometimes it can be difficult to know which one is best for you.  Firstly, decide on what type of hold you want.  Do you want your hair to stay looking natural with a little hold or do you want it to stay still and not move an inch?  Once you’ve decided this it will make it easier to then make your purchase.

SPRAY FROM A DISTANCE: if you don't know this one then you really should.... it's quite important. One of hairspray's missions is to prevent strands from sticking together. If you spray too close, you're counteracting your intensions. The ideal distance you should spray is 12" from the nozzle to the hair. To avoid an unwanted stiff texture, be sure to keep the spray can in constant motion, spraying around the hair and not in one spot.

BRUSH IT OUT WELL: If you’ve chosen a good quality product then most hairsprays will brush out at the end of the day leaving your hair not feeling sticky or hard.  It’s important to brush your hair spray out at the end of the day as if you go and use heated styling products the next morning then chances are the hairspray will still be in your hair and you will just be burning the hairspray onto your strands which is never a good thing.  If you’ve noticed your hair becoming brittle and a little fried at the ends then this could be the reason why.

WASH IT OUT WELL: using hairspray on a daily basis is a sure way to collect what we call "product build-up". Most shampoos are designed to wash out oil and particles of dead skin (gross but it's true), but they just won't cut it when washing out hairspray. You will need to wash with a CLARIFYING shampoo a couple of times a week to get rid of any left-over products that have accumulated in your hair. Over using a clarifying shampoo can dry your hair out too so you really do only need to use it a couple of times a week just to make sure that your hair is completely clean before you re-style it.

Happy spraying x
